About Supporting Underachievement: The Power of Motivation

Supporting Underachievement: The Power of Motivation introduces teachers to an exploration of what drives gifted underachievement, and of the strategies that can be used to reignite student motivation to learn.

Supporting Underachievement: The Power of Motivation is an online course developed by G&t4you Pty Ltd, t/as Gifted Online. The course is 2 hours in duration. Each module may consist of any of the following: learning content, quizzes and optional self-reflection tasks.

Context: As outlined in the Australian Teaching Standards (2022), it is every teacher’s responsibility to establish learning goals, effective classroom communication and inclusive and positive interactions that support underachieving student participation. The importance of teachers recognising a need to engage parents and carers in supporting underachieving students is critical in order to build effective provision for these students. By completing the online course, Supporting Underachievement: The Power of Motivation, participants demonstrate the intent to to build skill in addressing identified student learning needs.

Learning Outcomes for participants in Supporting Underachievement: The Power of Motivation address the following: Participants will:

• build understanding of the terms ‘underachievement’ and ‘motivation’
• explore the research around motivation and underachievement in gifted students  
• explore the possible impacts of underachievement in gifted students 
• become familiar with the possible causes of gifted underachievement
• develop understanding of the student’s viewpoint in relation to underachieving behaviours
• explore how the key issues relating to motivation for gifted students interact with the possible causes
• build a deep understanding of the impact a gifted student’s ‘self-view’ has in relation to underachievement
• build a deep understanding of the impact that the teacher and classroom culture has on gifted underachievement
• become familiar with the Trifocal Model for Reversing Gifted Underachievement 
• be introduced to a range of strategies that a teacher can implement to increase motivation and reduce underachieving behaviours in gifted students 
• engage in self-reflection for improvement.
