The Mission of Gifted Online

The driving motivation for the inception of Gifted Online has been personal experience of learning about, and working with, gifted students and their teachers. I’ve seen how the lack of focus on gifted education within pre-service training has left many teachers with great intentions, but struggling to find effective ways to support their gifted students. The result of this? Gifted students who are not achieving all they could. Over the last twenty years in my roles working with and in schools, ten of those as a gifted education advisor to a system of 150 schools K-12, I’ve been able to develop an understanding of some accessible and effective ways to help teachers become more confident and successful in identifying and effectively supporting gifted students.

In developing the resources provided by Gifted Online, my aim has been to provide professional learning in a range of forms to help systems, schools and individual teachers in three key areas:

  1. Building awareness of the core gifted principles;
  2. Developing teacher understanding and improved identification of gifted students;
  3. Providing structured guidance around aspects of implementation as teachers develop practices to support and challenge gifted students in the classroom.

Rationale: Flexibility for Busy Teachers

The workload of teachers today leaves them with limited time for professional learning, making the majority of available Gifted Education professional learning options too onerous for teachers to commit to. All professional learning provided by Gifted Online requires short and flexible time allocation.

For example, while a particular online course may be 1.5hrs in duration, participants may go in and out of the course over several weeks to complete that 1.5hrs. It does not have to be done in one sitting.

Similarly, resource packages are structured for those using them to get a clear and simple overview of a Key Principle, with the option to use embedded links to delve deeper in areas of specific interest through short video clips or pdfs

Live and interactive webinars provide opportunities for teachers to ask their own questions about specific aspects of gifted education that they may be struggling with or to get some deeper insight about an area of interest to them

System or school leaders and teachers are invited to make use of the accessible and flexible Online Professional Learning options that Gifted Online can offer so that the gifted students in your care are able to become the positive, successful, and fulfilled people we all want them to be.
