About Meet Their Minds: Pre-assessment

Meet Their Minds: Pre-assessment introduces teachers and school leaders to the basic principles of pre-assessment and its role in supporting the development of informed learning in the classroom.
Meet Their Minds: Pre-assessment is an online course developed by G&t4you Pty Ltd, t/as Gifted Online. The course is 2 hours in duration. Each module may consist of any of the following: learning content, quizzes and optional self-reflection tasks.
Context: As outlined in the Australian Teaching Standards (2022), it is every teacher’s responsibility to use the analysis of student data and evaluative judgement of student understanding to refine planning and support effective learning. By completing the online course, Meet Their Minds: Pre-assessment, participants demonstrate an interest in building their skills to effectively understand the existing proficiency and readiness of gifted students in order to have a clear understanding of their learning needs in relation to each upcoming learning program. This demonstrates an active intention to update their knowledge and practice.
Learning Outcomes for participants in Meet Their Minds: Pre-assessment address the following: Participants will:
- reflect on their own current practice in relation to the use of pre-assessment
- become familiar with research around the purpose of pre-assessment and its impact on gifted students’ learning
- explore the possible ways to determine gifted student proficiency levels and readiness for learning
- become familiar with the keys points that impact effective use of pre-assessment: design, format, timing, analysis
- develop understanding of how to ensure close alignment between pre-assessment and the learning outcomes of the class program
- explore effective pre-assessment design: task design, phrasing of questions, task format
- build a deep understanding of the the term ‘proficiency’ in this context
- be introduced to how to construct a proficiency criteria to guide analysis of student responses
- become familiar with the value and process of deep pre-assessment analysis
- be introduced to how to use pe-assessment analysis to inform differentiated learning for the gifted
- be introduced to an evaluation tool to self-evaluate the effectiveness of pre-assessment design
- engage in self-reflection for improvement.
