About Exceptional – Twice! Identification of 2e Students

Exceptional – Twice! Identification of 2e Students introduces this key group within the gifted population. It explores the challenges that the interplay of giftedness and other exceptionalities bring for both students and teachers, and examines the critical role of accurate identification to inform appropriate support of these complex students.


Exceptional – Twice! Identification of 2e Students is an online course developed by G&t4you Pty Ltd, t/as Gifted Online. The course is 1.5 hours in duration. Each module may consist of any of the following: learning content, quizzes and optional self-reflection tasks.

Context: As outlined in the Australian Teaching Standards (2022), it is every teacher’s responsibility to know students and how they learn and to understand the physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students, which includes those who are twice-exceptional.  By completing the online course, Exceptional – Twice! Identification of 2e Students,  participants  demonstrate an active intention to take responsibility for improving their teaching through professional development, in order to better understand, and effectively identify and support these complex students, and therefore more effectively support them in their learning

Learning Outcomes for participants in Exceptional – Twice! Identification of 2e Students address the following: Participants will:

  • develop understanding of the concept of twice-exceptionality (or 2e) 
  • become familiar with the many forms twice-exceptionality can take
  • be introduced to the research-based approach to identification of twice-exceptionality   
  • become familiar with the evidence that must be gathered to identify a 2e student
  • be introduced to the challenges inherent in the identification of twice-exceptionality
  • build awareness of the importance of establishing a known and documented process to guide the identification of 2e students
  • build understanding of the positive impact of accurate identification on 2e students’ learning and wellbeing 
  • engage in self-reflection for improvement.
